Thus facilitating the provision of safe and efficient care. It is there fore incumbent upon the employer to provide a safe and supportive work environment that protects nursing/midwifery personal from occupational hazards –such as exposure to HIV/AIDS and other blood borne infections –and prevent transmission of infection to patient/client . Measures that promote a safer work environment: ü Education of employees about the occupational risk and methods of prevention of HIV/AIDS hepatitis and other infectious diseases. ü Adherence to safety policies and procedures for reporting exposure. ü Availability of appropriate disinfectants to clean up spills of blood or other body fluids. ü Provision of personal protective equipment such as gloves and other barrier devices.And so many other things The employer must also be responsible for: ü Providing work practice controls such as needless intravenous system, safe needle system, and appropriate sharps disposal. ü Maintaining appropriate staffing levels ü Ensuring that universal precautions are implemented. ü Providing post-exposure counseling follow –up treatment and care. ü Controlling shift lengths and providing supervision of inexperienced staff. ü Addressing the health care , compensation and financial needs of HIV positive Nursing /midwifery personal ü Providing dispute settlement mechanisms for HIV infected personal ü And so many others.
